Ayurveda

ayurveda science

An ancient science.

Ayurveda is an ancient Indian science, passed down through generations and still revered today for its efficacy and use of natural herbal and mineral ingredients. Ayurveda is derived from a Sanskrit word that literally means Science of Life or Practices of Longevity.

Ayurveda is India’s traditional, natural healing system that has been practiced for more than 5,000 years. Drawing from the very essence of life, its purpose is to bring balance –within the human body, exactly how the universe works. It considers the person as a whole, i.e. the body along with the mind and focuses on restoring the balance within the human body.

Taken in its entirety, Ayurveda is anchored by the five elements that constitute our universe: Air, water, fire, earth, and ether. It believes that the human body is a microcosm of the universe, i.e., all the elements present in the universe can be found within our body.

Every individual has his or her own unique mix of these elements… a blueprint, that governs the person’s physical and mental qualities. According to Ayurveda, true health can only be achieved when all the five elements are in balance. Every time these elements go out of balance, it manifests itself in the form of an illness or disease.

There are three doshas, or subtle biological forces, of these five elements, known as Vata (motion), Pitta (metabolism), and Kapha (cohesiveness).

The three Doshas

pitta
Pitta

Fire & Water
Force of Transformation

Pitta is known for a highly intelligent personality and determined soul. Perfection being the goal, Pitta makes a good leader and facilitator of change. Usually a medium weight and build, Pitta skin tends to be sensitive or combination with congestion in the t-zone. Common health imbalances are breakouts or rashes, irrational and temperamental, acid reflux, headaches, and loose bowel movements.

kapha
Kapha

Water & Earth
Force of Cohesion

Kapha is known for a loyal personality and a strong, steady demeanor. With a calm and grounded presence, Kapha makes a great friend and nurturing companion. Usually a medium to larger build, Kapha skin tends to be smooth, oily, and cool with larger pores. Common health imbalances are weight gain, sluggish digestion, prone to sinus and respiratory ailments, lethargy, and food cravings.

vatta
Vata

Air & Ether
Force of Mobility

Vata is known for a lively personality and a joyful, friendly demeanor. Quick in thought and action, constant motion defines this creative soul. Usually slim with a fine-boned build, Vata skin tends to be dry and thin with small or invisible pores. Common health imbalances are: tired or fatigued, forgetful and frazzled with a lack of focus, have difficulty falling asleep and occasional
constipation.
